Caroni Bird Sanctuary 4 hours
This trip by boat into the Caroni Swamp is a delightful way to spend a relaxing
afternoon enjoying the peace, tranquillity and natural beauty of this mangrove reserve. An
opportunity to see various species of swamp life as well as the spectacular flight of the
Scarlet Ibis as they return for their evening nesting on the mangrove trees. A unique
experience, not to be missed.
Asa Wright Nature Centre 7 hours
A scenic highway drive east of Port of Spain through residential, agricultural and
industrial districts, continuing onto the Blanchisseuse mountain road, through our
tropical rain forests, and several cocoa, coffee and citrus estates. Upon arrival at Asa
Wright Nature Centre, you can explore the many trails with unique opportunities to see the
variety of our flora and fauna. For those who prefer a less active day, one can relax in
the cosy comfort of the recently restored estate house and admire the view from the
verandah.
Turtle Watching
(Seasonal March-June)
8 hours
This tour takes you North along the Toco Main Road to the 2 mile long Matura Beach
where you may observe the Leather-back Turtle as she comes ashore to nest. These
endangered turtles nest at night during the months March to June and take between forty to
sixty minutes to prepare their nests, lay their eggs, then painstakingly cover their nests
before returning to the water. Please bring along flashlight Nature's Wonders 8 hours Your
drive south takes you into the Pointe-a-Pierre oil refinery, which has as its paradox an
impressive wildlife sanctuary within it's boundary. The sanctuary houses some very rare
birdlife including endangered species which are bred at the sanctuary and then released
into the wild. The tour continues to the Pitch Lake at La Brea. This is the largest known
natural deposit of asphalt in the world and has been processed and exported for over 100
years. History tells us that Sir Walter Raleigh stopped here to caulk his ship. This is a
unique opportunity to visit the asphalt museum as well as take a guided tour to the lake.
Discover Grande Riviere 8 hours
This scenic drive takes you along the North East coast where the rugged seascape is a
treat for the outdoor type. Accessible beaches along the way include Salibea, Sans Souci
and Grande Riviere where a stop is made for refreshments on this mile long sandy beach.
Explore the unspoilt forest with it's unique flora and fauna or swim in the inviting
waters of the Caribbean Sea.
